The defense mechanism of the human body known as the immune system helps to fight the body against a number of infections and diseases. So one can say that individual health is dependent on how strong the immune system is. A healthy immune system is crucial to enhance longevity. A person with an impaired immune system has a high probability of falling prey to infections. In fact, these people fall sick frequently and visit the doctor every now and then. Taking food lacking in vitamins is actually responsible for a compromised immune system.

Immune System Vitamins

Adequate intake of vitamins daily is essential to provide a boost to our defense mechanism. Many people ask 'how to strengthen the immune system'. Well, including the following vitamins in the diet will serve the purpose.

Vitamin A
Eating foods high in vitamin A in sufficient amounts daily can help strengthen the immune system. Vitamin A tops the list of immune system vitamins. Studies also show that vitamin A positively affects the immune system. Humans require food for energy, similarly immune system needs vitamin A to combat bacterial or viral infection. The immune system uses vitamin A to make white blood cells, which are also known as infection fighting cells. So to thwart the invasion of intruders like bacteria or viruses, intake of vitamin A is a must.

Vitamin B
Among all the B vitamins, the vitamin that is essential for building a strong immune system is B6. Research has proved that deficiency in vitamin B6, can have a negative impact on the normal functioning of the immune system. To maintain the efficiency of the immune system, vitamin B6 has to be included in the diet. Vitamin B6 promotes well-being of lymph nodes, which is an integral part of the immune system. The lymph nodes that are located in different areas of the body such as the armpits, groin and tonsils, produce white blood cells. Read more on vitamin B.

Vitamin C
This is one of the immune system vitamins, very important to strengthen the defense system of our body. Vitamin C foods have been included in the list of foods that can boost immune system. Vitamin C that is found in plenty of vegetables and fruits ensures that white blood cells are being produced sufficiently to fight against bacteria and viruses.

Vitamin E
Production of immune cells (B cells) is essential as they make antibodies known to kill the bacteria. It is found that vitamin E promotes production of B cells. With age, the defense mechanism of our body shows a decline to combat infections. However, with moderate intake of vitamin E daily, one can slow down the progression of these negative changes in the immune system. Read more on vitamins to boost immune system.

Immune System Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins are not the only nutrients required for optimal functioning of the immune system. It is said that success is a blend of hard work and good fortune. Similarly, a diet for a healthy immune system is a blend of vitamins and minerals. Minerals, too can contribute to keep the immune system 'fit and fine'. The minerals that are regarded as immune system boosters are zinc, iodine, and selenium.

Keep in mind that immune system vitamins are essential but taking them in massive amounts is not recommended, as it may cause vitamin toxicity and cause some unpleasant side effects.
