On this posting I'll explain how to put together the background tracks for the final mix. The background sounds track are tracks of long sound effect recording that start at a beginning of the scene and end at the end of the scene, for example Wind, birds, city traffic, Walla ( crowd voices ) room-tones etc.

Editing the background sound effects for a Television show or a movie could be a good deal of work. I find that as a way to be the most effective, the first thing I should do when I look at a film is putting markers on every scene change and I suggest naming all those markers by the location of the scene. Also, do not overlook that any phone call in between two people or more would be a location change, even if the two people talking are practically neighbors, it's important to create some kind of a difference between each home. After putting down the markers for any location change, you go to the first scene and start putting in tracts of backgrounds. Basically with backgrounds, the more the better, but when I say more I don't mean putting six tracks of similar backgrounds.

If what you add doesn't make a difference or only makes the scene noisier you shouldn't put it in. What you need to be very careful about is to choose the right sound to begin with and not trying to create the right sound by adding more and more tracks. For example, if you need heavy traffic, find a good track of heavy traffic and not bunch of light traffic tracks layered one on top of the other. Also, when you're choosing different tracks you can mute and solo to see which one is adding more substance and which one is adding more noise than substance. You need to have a very good library to cut an average movie; you can't keep re-using the same sounds on different locations. For example, if it's a movie about people going to different bars every night, every bar needs to have its own sounds. After you establish sound for each location you can use the "copy and paste" to save time and keep continuity in your movie. Of course, you also need to look for different things for the same location to cover different times of the day. For example, in office will be much busier during daytime as opposed to late at night when there are only few people left working.

The way most mixers will like to have your tracks is like a checkerboard, by that I mean on every location change your next set of sounds needs to be on a different tracks. that will give the mixer enough time to make volume and effects changes on his mixing console, if you put your sounds back to back the mixer will not be able to do the changes fast enough unless he uses automation, but that will be allot of work. I usually set my session with 3 sets of backgrounds, in each set I usually set 4 mono tracks and 4-6 stereo tracks. alway try to keep the same location ( if you can ) on the same set of tracks, that will save the mixer allot of time.

A big argument between background editors ( old timers vs newer editors ) is should we touch the volume of the tracks. The thinking of not touching is let the mixers do it they can do it better because they hear every thing together ( music, dialog, effects etc ) they have better monitors and so on, I say this is nonsense, you should definitely balance your track volume wise, what you shouldn't do is start adding affects like reverb and eq to your BG tracks.
