Of all garden furniture, the most comfortable and lovely are the garden hammocks. Not only are they great to rest and snooze in, they also go a long way in creating a paradise in your own backyard. What's more, thanks to their elegant and simple design, you can put them up in virtually any 12-foot space: in your patio, in a balcony, or on a terrace.

Since you probably know how wonderful it is to rest in a hammock, we're not going to talk about the merits of having one. What we will discuss, are the various factors you should evaluate before buying garden hammocks.

The first thing to consider is the space where you intend to put it up. How much area do you have available? Are there any naturally suitable supports to tie one up, or will you need stands? Is there sufficient shade? These things will help you decide better on what types will best suit your purpose.

There are a wide variety of garden hammocks available. While there isn't really such a thing as a good variety or a bad one, which one is good for you depends on where you plan to use it, as well as how frequently and for how long.

The first hammocks designs, made by the ancient Mayans over a thousand years ago, still survive today. These Mayan garden hammocks are perfect for hot weather, because their design and weave allows for excellent air flow. Another very popular type is the Mexican, which is also well ventilated. These generally come in bright shades, and are perfect for adding a bit of charm and color to any open space.

The typically weight capacity of a hammock is between 300 to 400 pounds. If you want something that can support more weight, consider double-hammocks, as these are capable of bearing 600 pounds or more. These are typically made of fabrics, and are wide enough to accommodate two people, if necessary.

If space is a constraint, there are the very small swing-type garden hammocks. These are perfect for confined spaces, and can be hung from a single tree branch. Although they're like swings, you'll find them to be far more comfortable than any other swing!
