Ready to assemble furniture is a wonderfully inexpensive but stylish way to improve your work or home environment.
Simply buy the furniture in a flat box and assemble at home or work.
I have just assembled four pieces for our home office (a desk, a filing cabinet, and two storage cabinets) and would like to share some assembly tips.
1. Allow plenty of time. The average piece took me four hours of steady work.
2. Get organized. I opened the box, read the instruction booklet, and put the hardware pieces in plastic bins for easy identification.
3. Follow the instruction booklet to the letter. It works best to review the step you are about to take and visualize what you are about to accomplish by reviewing the picture of the finished piece on the box. When you are done with that step, review the instructions again to make sure you got it right.
4. Work steady, but review your progress along the way. Mistakes cannot be easily corrected. When I got to the last step of one piece of furniture, I had a short screw and a long screw left when I needed two short screws. Taking the whole project apart to find my mistake was out of the question. I had to use a similar short screw from my garage.
5. Go to the company’s website if it offers assembly tips and videos.
6. If a piece of trim, for example, doesn’t seem to fit, don’t break out the sandpaper or wood file. Review the instructions. I found that I put one trim piece on upside down which created a fit issue with another trim piece. Once I found and corrected that error, the second trim piece fit in nicely.
7. Get help lifting and moving. The boxes weigh up to 125 pounds. Once a piece is mostly assembled, you have to turn it over to install the backing. An extra set of hands helps.
8. The instruction booklet is your best friend. It shows diagrams of each piece of wood, each part, and each fastener, plus the simple tools needed - basically a screwdriver and small hammer.
9. A few additional tools may help. I used a rubber mallet to jostle fittings in place, and a pair of pliers. I also used two different Phillips head screwdrivers.
10. The first piece of furniture you assemble will be a learning experience.
You will become familiar with the company’s assembly methods and engineering that make the furniture joints tight and the finished piece solid.
